 IMSIU Achieves Four Medals and an International Award at the Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions 2026

​    Imam Mohammad Ibn Saud Islamic University achieved four medals and an international award at the Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions 2026 for distinguished scientific innovations that reflect the excellence of its research outputs and its ability to transform knowledge into practical solutions with impact in the fields of health, energy, and advanced technologies.

 

     The research team from the College of Science—Dr. Sharif Hussein, Dr. Mohammed Al-Issa, Dr. Hassan Radeeni, Dr. Nayef Al-Otaibi, and Dr. Mohammed Al-Ghoneim—won the Gold Medal with the Congratulations of the Jury, which is considered the highest award at the exhibition. Their innovation involves the production of usable bio-membranes from a biological source and a method for their preparation. The innovation is based on developing wearable bio-membranes from nanocomposites based on nanocellulose derived from plant cellulose using date palm stem fibers combined with other organic materials. These membranes can be used in various medical and health applications, such as sterile medical gloves, medical covers, and surgical sutures, in addition to food safety applications. The innovation represents a sustainable alternative to synthetic membranes and has been registered as a patent with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

 

      The research team from the College of Engineering—Dr. Mohammed Shalaby and Dr. Abdulrahman Al-Shaabani, specialists in alternative energy engineering—also won a Gold Medal for their innovation related to water desalination using electro-solar energy. This innovation contributes to developing sustainable solutions for water desalination while reducing carbon emissions and promoting the use of clean energy sources. The invention has been registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

 

     In the field of advanced technologies, the research team from the College of Science—Dr. Khalid Hassan Ibn Ouf, Dr. Hajo Idris Mohammed, Dr. Osama Al-Daghri, and Dr. Amin Othman, specialists in laser technologies—won a Silver Medal for their innovation, which is also registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The invention focuses on developing advanced organic laser and photonic materials based on derivatives of smart organic compounds. These materials represent a promising alternative to conventional laser dyes by reducing toxicity, improving photochemical stability and photostability, and increasing optical gain. They can be applied in various fields, including optical films, smart coatings, light-emitting diodes, laser systems mounted on drones, and biomedical technologies.

 

       Additionally, the research team from the College of Medicine—Prof. Salahuddin Khan and student Abdulrahman Al-Ammar—won a Gold Medal for their invention titled “Antimicrobial Medical Sutures Using Silver Nanoparticles." This innovation contributes to reducing infections associated with surgical sites and enhancing patient safety. The invention has also been registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

 

       Furthermore, student Abdulrahman Al-Ammar received the Excellence Award, presented by the Korean Association for the Promotion of Inventions, in recognition of his participating innovation in the exhibition. This achievement reflects the excellence of student researchers and their ability to contribute to the development of innovative medical solutions that improve healthcare.

 

      This achievement highlights the distinction of the university's members in research and innovation and reflects its role in supporting high-quality innovations and representing the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in international scientific forums, contributing to strengthening the knowledge economy and achieving the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030.
